Batman: The Enemy Within Review (Episode 1)

Approximately one year after the defeat of the Children of Arkham, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Troy Baker) slowly starts regaining his reputation in Gotham City following the unveiling of his parents as criminals. He targets Rumi Mori (Keone Young), one of Gotham City’s most notorious arms dealers, who is seen gambling at a casino. However, a mysterious man in a hood captures Mori and takes the casino patrons hostage. Wayne suits up as Batman and reenters the casino to discover that the man with the hood is Riddler (Robin Atkin Downes), a criminal mastermind from Gotham City’s past who hasn’t been seen in several years. Batman saves the hostages and pursues Riddler, who throws a puzzle box at Batman, telling him that if he doesn’t solve the riddle hidden within it, people will get hurt. After Riddler escapes, Batman meets Amanda Waller (Debra Wilson), director of the Agency, as well as Waller’s accomplices, Special Agents Iman Avesta (Emily O’Brien) and Vernon Blake (Christian Lanz).

After returning to a re-designed Batcave, Wayne finds that the puzzle box is actually a record, and after playing it, receives a soundwave emitting an unknown signal. He goes to Wayne Enterprises and asks Lucius Fox (Dave Fennoy) to decode it. Lucius tells Bruce Wayne that they should bring his daughter Tiffany (Valarie Rae Miller) into the company. After being interrogated by Waller’s agents who accuse Bruce of being involved in recent criminal activity, Bruce is contacted by Lucius who tells him the box is dangerous before he is killed in an explosion. At Lucius Fox’s funeral, Bruce reunites with his acquaintance from Arkham Asylum named “John Doe” (Anthony Ingruber), who has been released for good behavior. John asks Wayne for a favor: to meet his friends and join his group, something Bruce can agree or disagree to. After gaining a lead on Riddler on the East End of Gotham City, Commissioner James Gordon (Murphy Guyer) and Batman are trapped in a booby-trapped hideout, where they must solve a riddle to get out alive. While investigating the area, Batman finds a homing missile and deduces that the signal emitted from the box resulted in an airstrike on Fox’s location.

Determined to find Riddler, Bruce decides whether to go after Mori, who supplied the homing missiles to Riddler, or Riddler’s second-in-command Eli Knable (Alex Hernandez). Regardless of the player’s choice, Batman discovers that Riddler is on a ship and has taken Waller’s top agents hostage. Batman infiltrates the ship, but is captured along with Agent Avesta. Riddler gives Batman an ultimatum if he can solve three of his riddles. If he answers them correctly, Avesta will get deafened by Riddler’s sonic signal.* If he does not answer a question or provides a wrong answer, Avesta’s colleagues will be killed one by one. Batman outsmarts Riddler by redirecting his homing missiles to the sea. After being captured and cuffed, Riddler reveals that he was betrayed by the leader of a group called The Pact before an unknown assassin shoots and kills him with a poison dart. Waller arrives with Detective Renee Montoya (Sumalee Montano) and the rest of the GCPD. Waller demotes Gordon as a result of Batman and Gordon’s interference in the case. After gaining a lead on Harleen Quinzel, a former psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum and who may be able to provide information on The Pact, Waller reveals to Batman that she knows his secret identity.
