We are a couple weeks into the new year, and we decide to take a look at the upcoming year and some of the most anticipated games of the new year!
Here is what we have!
10. Street Fighter V (PlayStation 4, PC)
Street Fighter V carries on the side-scrolling fighting gameplay of its predecessors, in which two fighters use a variety of attacks and special abilities to knock out their opponent. The game features the EX gauge introduced in Street Fighter III, which builds as the player lands attacks and can be used to either power up special moves or perform super combos known as Critical Arts, although the Focus Attacks from the previous game have been removed.
9. The Division (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)
In the game, a pandemic that spreads on Black Friday causes the United States Government to collapse in five days; basic services fail one by one, and without access to food or water, the country quickly descends into chaos. In the wake of the devastating pandemic that sweeps through cities across the country, including New York City, it is discovered that the disease is transmitted through germs on banknotes. As a last resort, the player is part of a classified unit of self-supported tactical agents, known as the “Strategic Homeland Division (SHD)”, or “The Division” for short. Leading seemingly ordinary lives, SHD agents are trained to operate independently of command when all else fails. This group is established to combat the threat brought about by the outbreak and are given direct authority by the President of the United States to do whatever it takes to prevent the fall of society and piece the city back together. Throughout the game, the agents will find themselves caught in a worldwide conspiracy and will be forced to combat both the threats of the virus as well as those who unleashed it.
8. Doom (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC)
Doom will be a first-person shooter which has “badass demons, big effing guns, and moving really fast” as key principles, according to id Software executive producer Marty Stratton. The game will feature a large arsenal of weapons, which can be collected and freely switched by players throughout the game. Many classic weapons, including the super shotgun and BFG 9000, will make a return. In addition, melee weapons such as the chainsaw, which can cut enemies in half, are also featured. Many enemies from the original games like the Revenant, Mancubus, and Cyberdemon return as well, some of them redesigned. As the combat system of the game puts emphasis on momentum and speed, the game allows players to perform movements like sprinting and double-jumping. A combat system known as “push forward combat” is featured, which discourages players from taking cover behind obstacles or resting to regain health. As a result, the game will not feature any cover mechanics or a health-regeneration system. Players can collect health and armour pick-ups scattered throughout levels, or kill enemies to regain health. A new mechanic introduced in Doom is the melee execution system. It allows players to perform a melee-takedown when players deal enough damages to enemies. Enemies available for melee-takedown will be highlighted
7. The Legend of Zelda (Wii U)
Pre-release reception was positive after the game’s reveal. Before the announcement of the delay, GameTrailers ranked the new Zelda title number one in its countdown of most-anticipated upcoming video games, citing its freedom of exploration and “design philosophy that both reinvents what a Zelda game can be while simultaneously bringing it back to its roots.” In the website’s community poll, released a week later, The Legend of Zelda was the second most-anticipated game, beaten only by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
6. The Last Guardian (PlayStation 4)
The Last Guardian ’s story follows that of a boy who is trying to escape from a setting resembling the ruins of a large expansive castle. The boy has been kidnapped “under mysterious circumstances” according to Ueda, and comes to discover a giant, feathered creature, resembling a griffin, named Trico (トリコ Toriko?). The game will revolve around the developing friendship between the boy and Trico. The name of the creature can be taken to mean “prisoner” (虜 toriko?), “baby bird” (鳥の子 tori no ko?), or a portmanteau of “bird” (鳥 tori?) and “cat” (猫 neko?). Trico has spears and arrows stuck in its back, and is initially bound by a chain. Later, it is freed and is shown attacking an armored soldier. Screenshots, along with the E3 trailer, show the boy attempting to sneak past and attack other soldiers. Trico will at first be hostile toward the boy, but during the course of the game, the two will develop an emotional attachment to each other. Ueda suggested there may be similar creatures like Trico in the game, but could not confirm this.
5. Overwatch (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Overwatch is set in a near-future version of Earth, years after the resolution of the global-scale “Omnic Crisis”. This crisis put humanity under threat of the “Omnic” artificial intelligence. This led to the uprising of robots all around the world and a massive conflict on the global scale. To end this conflict, an international task force called “Overwatch” was formed by the United Nations to protect humanity, ending the Crisis. In the years after, Overwatch remained as a peacekeeping force, but after multiple incidents of criminal activity popped up around the globe, accusations of corruption and sedition began to surface. The people turned against those who had saved them. Once regarded as heroes, members of Overwatch were now looked down upon with suspicion. Then one day, the headquarters of Overwatch were suddenly destroyed– apparently by accident. Officially, the attack took the life of Overwatch leader Jack Morrison and second-in-command Gabriel Reyes. After this event, the task force was eventually disbanded. It is believed by some that the cause of the downfall of Overwatch was due actually to an elaborate conspiracy by those who wanted to see the end of the organization, although nothing has been confirmed officially by the UN.
4. Dark Souls III (Xbox One, PlayStation 4)
Dark Souls III is an action role-playing game set in a third-person perspective, similar to previous games in the series. According to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s gameplay design “follows closely from Dark Souls II”. Players are equipped with a variety of weapons including shortbows, explosives like fire bombs, greatswords and dual-wielding swords to fight against enemies, and shields that can be used to deflect an enemies’ attack and protect the player from suffering damage
3. Horizon: Zero Dawn (PlayStation 4)
Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game in which players take control of Aloy, a hunter and archer, as she progresses through a post-apocalyptic land which is ruled by mechanized creatures, such as robotic dinosaurs. The game is set in a future 1000 years from the present, in which human civilization has long abandoned Earth due to the world being dominated by robotic creatures, which have since become the strongest creatures in the world. The component of these creatures, such as electricity and the metal they are composed of, are vital to Aloy’s survival, and she can loot these creatures’ corpses to find these useful resources.
2. Uncharted 4: Thief’s End (PlayStation 4)
Uncharted 4 is set three years after the events of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception with Nathan “Nate” Drake, now retired as a fortune hunter, has settled into a normal life with his wife Elena Fisher. His world is then turned upside down when his older brother Sam, long believed to be dead, suddenly appears seeking Drake’s help. Together they embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a conspiracy behind Libertatia, a long lost pirate colony, and its fabled pooled pirate treasure. Naughty Dog outlined the game’s plot as “his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately, what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves”
