When it comes to our favorite video games, every great hero must have a fantastic villain. It is what makes the game engaging and gives that gamer the sense of accomplishment upon beating that villain. With this month of October being the month of horror we decided instead of looking at our top 10 heroes first, we decided to start things off with the villains.
10. Shao Khan (The Mortal Kombat Series)
Shao Khan, the 10,000 year old ruler of Outworld, has been heckling gamers in the Mortal Kombat universe for years. He has been on a mission to devour and conquest other worlds and merge the realms into his own so that he can live as long as he has.
9. Vaas Montenegro (Far Cry 3)
Who can ever, and I mean EVER forget the craziness of Vaas in Far Cry 3? He is the type of villain you have to like, and when the time actually comes to confront him, you look for another reason to keep him alive!
8. Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2)
Handsome Jack and our #9 villain Vaas share a lot of similarities. Both are crazy, and just crazy enough that the entirety of the game your in communication with him you actually look forward to what he says next. The only downfall is when you finally encounter Handsome Jack, it is a little underwhelming.
7. Dr. Albert W. Wily (Mega Man Series)
A scientist driven to madness over jealous towards his former colleague Dr. Light, Wily is best known for trying to take over the world with a team of robot masters, who are quickly bested by Mega Man. He usually then begs for his life saying he won’t do it again, and then he does it all over again. Never the less, the number of times he’s caused chaos throughout the years earns him the 7th spot.
6. Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)
Wesker has been an ultimate evil for gamers in the Resident Evil series. Especially when it comes to Resident Evil 5. He was determined to turn the world into biological monsters and himself into a superhuman!
5. Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy VI)
Expecting Sephiroth? While he may look badass standing in a flaming inferno, if slightly effeminate, in terms of evil accomplishments however Kefka is leaps and bounds ahead of any other Final Fantasy villain.
4. Arthas (Warcraft Series)
Arthas, Prince of Lorderan is first introduced in Warcraft 3 as a good guy, before being turned to the dark side, I mena, cursed by the blade Frostmorne, murdering his own father and becoming the Lich King. He makes a return in the World of Warcraft expansion “Wrath of the Lich King” and now has a few friends for you.
3. GlaDOS (Portal Series)
GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is a fictional artificially intelligent computer system and the main antagonist in the video game Portal, as well as in the first half of its sequel, Portal 2, after which she partners with player character Chell. Created by Erik Wolpaw and Kim Swift and voiced by Ellen McLain, she is responsible for testing and maintenance in the Aperture Science research facility in both titles. While GLaDOS initially appears to simply be a voice that guides the player, her words and actions become increasingly malicious as she makes her intentions clear. The game reveals that she is corrupted and used a neurotoxin to kill the scientists in the laboratory before the events of Portal. She is ostensibly destroyed at the end of the first title by Chell, but is revealed to have survived in the game’s closing credits song, “Still Alive”.
2. Bowser (The Super Mario Bros. Series)
Mention the term video game villain to anyone, and its most likely this is the first guy they’ll think of. Sometimes referred to as King Koopa, he first appeared in Super Mario Bros where, according to the instruction manual, he can use dark magic to turn the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom into Piranha plants, and floating bricks.
1. Gannondorf (The Legend of Zelda Series)
Ganondorf was born a member of the Gerudo; as the only male member to be born in a hundred years, Ganondorf is made either the King of the Gerudo or the Guardian of the Desert, depending on the game. Gifted with powerful magic, Ganondorf often seeks the omnipotent Triforce to grant his wish of conquering the entire world. He frequently wields the Triforce of Power, and stages coups against the Royal Family of Hyrule to take the Hyrulean Throne by force.
